ALABAMA’S LANDMARK BOATING SAFETY LAW
In 1993 at age 38, I became Alabama’s youngest-ever Commissioner of Conservation and Natural Resources in the administration of Gov. Jim Folsom. I donated my state salary and launched a crusade that led to the passage of a boating safety law that has been hailed as a national model.

VANESSA’S LAW
I later served as chief of staff to Lt. Gov. Steve Windom. During this term, I helped develop a bipartisan coalition that led to the passage of Vanessa’s Law, which forced Medicaid to cover breast reconstruction after radical mastectomy for breast cancer.

With my own money, I sued Governor Bob Riley and stopped his no-bid plan to lease Gulf State Park beach to a luxury hotel developer to build a 4-star hotel and spa that would have priced average Alabamians off the beach forever.

THE PACT CRISIS
I am not only a candidate for State Treasurer, but a PACT parent as well. In 1990, based on State Treasurer George Wallace, Jr.’s representations that the Prepaid Affordable College Tuition Program was guaranteed by the state, like many of you, I purchased PACT contracts for my daughter.

WALLACE ADVERTISED PACT AS GUARANTEED,
HIS CONTRACTS SAID THEY WERE GUARANTEED, AND THEY WERE
STAMPED WITH THE STATE SEAL.
But here’s the shocking untold story about PACT:
PACT WAS NEVER GUARANTEED!
Now we are fighting for the guarantees Wallace falsely claimed we had in the beginning.
PACT MUST BE SAVED because it is an INVESTMENT, NOT A BAILOUT!
